I’m going to start something new on my @Tumblr.  I’m going to rant, make lists, whatever I want, about things that I like.  At least until I don’t feel like it anymore, which in all likelihood, will be tomorrow.  No one asked me to do any of this, I just have too much free time and I should do SOMETHING besides Netflix and Playstation.  So, since no one asked, my top 10 favorite drum songs…in no particular order.

1. Braid-The New Nathan Detroits

People often ask who my favorite drummers are, and I don’t have a lot of answers.  Damon Atkinson(also in Hey Mercedes) would probably have to be tops for me though.  Definitely a huge influence on how I play.  Braid’s Frame and Canvas(which this song is from) is one of my favorite records ever. Funny story about this song, I wrote the exact same drum intro for one of my old bands songs, without having ever heard this song first.

2. Van Halen-Hot For Teacher

The most ridiculously, over the top, but somehow perfect, badass drum song ever. The end.

3. Burning Airlines-Pacific 231

This might be one of the weirdest 4/4 beats I’ve ever heard.  I feel like most of the time, if I heard something like this, I would think, “What are you doing?!?!”, but somehow, it works here.  In fact, it pretty much rules.  I’m one of about three people on Earth who prefer Burning Airlines to Jawbox, and Peter Moffett may be the biggest reason for it.

4. The Police-Can’t Stand Losing You

I think I first noticed this song years after everyone else did.  And even though by then it was already an old song, it still seemed way ahead of it’s time.  The change from the verse beat to the chorus beat confused my young ears, it’s just such a cool feel.  Stewart Copeland was a game-changer, but everyone knows that.

5. Led Zeppelin-The Fool In The Rain

Perhaps the greatest groove in the history of grooves.  It just feels so damn good.  It’s something that for years I’ve been telling myself I’m going to sit down and actually learn, but never have.

6. Foo Fighters-Everlong

Dave Grohl is probably the other biggest influence on my playing.  It’s hard to pick a favorite Dave Grohl song, but I feel like it may need to be this one for me.  (However, anything off of Nevermind or In Utero are so fun to just beat the crap out of your drums to).

7. Q And Not U-Hooray For Humans

I think even 12 years later, I can’t sit down at the drums without playing this beat at least once.

8. The Raconteurs-Consoler of the Lonely

I really love The Raconteurs.  This song kind of blew my mind the first time I heard it.  It’s so….fun!  The tempo changes rule.  So fun to play along with.

9. Tower of Power-Maybe It’ll Rub Off

I love a lot of 70’s funk.  The drumming is so good.  For me, this one is tops.

10. Green Day-Burnout

Tre Cool was about 85% of what I imitated when I was in high school.  I think I used to come home from school and play along with Dookie every single day.  That whole record is full of fun stuff.  But track one is probably my favorite.  It’s even got that cool drum feature in the middle.

Boom.

I’m not claiming that all of these songs are the BEST drum songs, simply, my favorite drum songs.  A lot of these are songs that I have to play anytime I sit down to play along with some records.  Others are songs I just wish I could play.  Either way, check out these songs, drummers!

This has been, since no one asked.
